Overview

The storyedit The story

The Aether story is the founding Zombies continuity, running from Nacht der Untoten in World at War (2008) to Revelations in Black Ops III. Its engine is Element 115, a meteoric element that reanimates the dead and powers the teleporters, wonder weapons and time travel the German research faction Group 935 builds around it. Four survivors carry the early maps — Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki and the group’s treacherous doctor, Edward Richtofen — later named the Ultimis crew.

Ultimis, Primis and Victis

Richtofen’s scheme to seize control of the undead drives Black Ops and the “Grand Scheme” finale on Moon, where the Earth is struck. Origins in Black Ops II reframes the whole saga: it introduces Primis, younger dimensional counterparts of the same four, and Doctor Monty, an omnipotent being defending the paradise of Agartha against the corrupting Apothicons. A third crew, Victis — Misty, Marlton, Russman and Stuhlinger — plays out the TranZit-era maps in between.

The cycle and its end

Black Ops III draws the crews together and culminates in Revelations, where Monty reveals the endless loop the characters are trapped in and rewrites them out of it. Revelations is the deliberate close of the Aether saga: every Treyarch map from 2008 onward resolves into it, and the reboot that follows — the Dark Aether — begins a separate continuity rather than extending this one.
