The Dark Aether is the rebooted continuity that began with Die Maschine in Black Ops Cold War (2020), set in the 1980s and excavated on the ruins of Nacht der Untoten. It follows Requiem, a CIA-backed strike team directed by Samantha Maxis, and their rivals in the Soviet Omega Group, as both sides investigate breaches to the Dark Aether — a hostile mirror dimension that supplants the older Aether cosmology.
The arc runs through Vanguard’s Der Anfang and The Archon, the Modern Warfare III open-world map Urzikstan under Operation Deadbolt, and Black Ops 6, where the crew — with a returning Edward Richtofen now working inside Requiem — plays through Terminus, Liberty Falls, Citadelle des Morts and the trilogy-closing maps. The through-line is Aetherium, the reality-warping resource both factions weaponise.
Black Ops 7 continues the saga directly from Black Ops 6. Its launch map, Ashes of the Damned, is the first Zombies map set entirely inside the Dark Aether dimension rather than viewed from Earth, and it teases alternate-dimension versions of the original crew. The wider Black Ops 7 story keeps unfolding across its post-launch seasons.
