Ludvig Maxis

Spoilers: medium

The founder and director of Group 935, whose research into Element 115 sets the entire Aether narrative in motion.

Overview

Doctor Ludvig Maxis founded Group 935 to change the world, and did. The mode’s original unseen authority — heard through Der Riese’s radios conducting the teleporter and hellhound experiments — he is betrayed by Richtofen in 1945 with his daughter as collateral, and spends the rest of two sagas as progressively less of a person: a soul on the Moon, an AI in Black Ops II, a brain in a drone at Origins. Fred Tatasciore voices him.

The many deaths of Maxis

Black Ops II is his revenge arc: as an electronic ghost he out-schemes Richtofen through Victis’s hands, wins canonically at Buried, opens Agartha — and dooms the Earth doing it, before Monty wipes that corrupted original from existence. The Dimension 63 version fares gentler: his drone-borne brain flies into the Agartha portal at Origins, and Monty rebuilds him a body in the House — but without a soul, which is precisely the flaw the Shadowman later exploits to get the Summoning Key opened.

Alpha Omega

His last act is his best: warning the crews of Monty’s plan and teleporting Samantha and Eddie to safety before Doctor Monty, in his true form, devours him. The model’s resemblance to philosopher Daniel Dennett — the man who wrote the book on brains in vats — was not an accident.
