Overview

George A. Romero — the director who invented the modern zombie film — stalks Call of the Dead as himself, dragged under the Siberian water by the real thing while shooting a movie about it. He is the mode’s first persistent boss: present from the opening seconds, immune to Insta-Kill and Nuke, carrying six figures of health, and impossible to kill permanently. Put him down and he retreats into the sea, only to wade back ashore two rounds later.

Calm and berserk

He has two moods. Calm, he trudges after the nearest player with a blue glow, content to follow. Hurt him — or let him land a hit — and he goes berserk: sprinting, slamming his electrified stage light to shock the ground, and roaring ordinary zombies into sprinters. Water is the reset switch; lead him in and he settles. A single V-R11 shot calms him instantly, and a V-R11 Lazarus shot while he stands in water banishes him for the round.

Making him leave

Forcing a retreat pays a Death Machine and a Random Perk Bottle, and with the map’s quest complete he surrenders the Wunderwaffe DG-2 instead. The efficient method is Pack-a-Punched headshots — the upgraded Dragunov hits him for five figures a shot — while he wades, calm, in the shallows. The Wunderwaffe itself is deliberately useless against him: one point of damage per hit, a joke Treyarch left in on purpose.

Behavior

A roaming boss with two states — calm and berserk. Any damage dealt or taken enrages him; leading him into water calms him again.

Engagement notes

Weak points

  • Headshots from high-damage weapons
  • The V-R11 calms or banishes him

Boss encounter

Solo approach

Manage him rather than fight him: keep your distance, lead him into water when he rages, and banish him with a V-R11 Lazarus shot while he stands in it.

Team approach

Assign one player to kite him clear of the group; if hunting the Death Machine reward, focus Pack-a-Punched headshots while he wades.
