Citadelle des Morts’ main quest — Treyarch never gave it a fancier name — is the trial Guy de Saint-Michel built for his four knightly sons and none of them finished: with all four upgraded Bastard Swords and all four Incantations, the crew decodes an alchemical wall in the Undercroft, salutes the Dining Hall statues in coded order, carries a Mystic Orb through four elemental challenges, and takes the Guardian Key to the Town Square statue — which stands up. The stone golem drags the squad into a lava arena for the boss fight, and the prize is the Obscurus Altilium, the amulet the dying Gabriel Krafft warns must never reach Richtofen.
Citadelle des Morts is Black Ops 6’s medieval turn: a castle above a fortified village in the Principality of Avalon, a fictional microstate on France’s Mediterranean coast, built over a leper-colony abbey and ruled in the 1300s by the renegade knight Guy de Saint-Michel — whose enforcers’ line became the French Syndicate that holds it now. A week after Terminus, Weaver, Grey, Carver and Maya arrive to rescue the demonologist Gabriel Krafft, with a newly repentant Ravenov drinking in the tavern below.
The village funnels up from Town Square through the tavern or the hilltop path to the ramparts — where the way into the sealed castle is not a door but the bronze Lion Cannon, rotated 180 degrees and fired at the entrance. Inside: the Entrance Hall’s dragon bust, the two-storey Dining Hall with its four knight statues, and the dungeons running down to the Oubliette.
There is no power switch — like Liberty Falls, everything works as its area opens. The map’s rune-circle Point of Power traps are the exception, waking only after Pack-a-Punch is active.
In the Oubliette, the lowest cell of the dungeon, a crated machine sits behind three locks. Break them and the map’s first Doppelghast bursts out; kill it, take the Blood Aetherium Crystal it drops, and feed the crystal to the rift in the crate. The machine stays put — this map’s wandering is done by the swords.
Four melee wonder weapons, one per knight of Avalon’s legend: Caliburn (dragon, fire), Durendal (stag, lightning), Balmung (raven, shadow) and Solais (lion, light). Great-helmed zombies drop the stamp that wakes a Dining Hall statue and grants its blade; each sword then has its own elemental ritual — carrying Aether fire between braziers, lightning rods on the ramparts, a cellar puzzle, a lion’s door — to reach its upgraded form. Four matching Incantation scrolls round out the arsenal, and the quest wants everything.
The Doppelghast debuts here — a two-skulled sprinter whose needle bursts blur the screen with hallucinations — alongside Terminus’s Amalgam, armored zombies and Vermin swarms. Notably absent: Manglers, for once.
With all four upgraded swords and Incantations in hand, the quest works through Krafft’s cell door, torn pages, an alchemical wall-code and a salute to each knight statue in coded order, then carries a Mystic Orb through four elemental trials to the Secret Study. The Town Square statue is the final door: a stone Guardian golem that drags the squad to a lava arena, shedding weak points through immunity phases as the floor shrinks. Fully soloable; the prize is the Obscurus Altilium, the amulet Krafft says must never reach Richtofen.
The victory costs the mission its point: zombies reach Krafft’s cell as the Guardian falls, and the dying demonologist sends the crew on to a nearby excavation site — The Tomb — with two warnings: the Sentinel Artifact corrupts whoever wields it, and Richtofen is his adopted son, whom he begs Weaver not to kill. Vulture Aid’s return after a twelve-year absence, the perk’s machine standing in the Dining Hall, is the map’s quieter piece of history.
