Main Quest

Maxis Potential

Firebase Z’s main quest is a rescue mission: Samantha Maxis is trapped in the Dark Aether behind Outpost 25’s gateway, and Requiem — with the disaffected Omega captain Ravenov inside the wire — goes in after her. Truth serum for Dr. Peck, Mimic-captured memories, excavated Aetherium crystals and a realigned satellite lead to the extraction, and an Orda boss fight in the Village closes it out. "Maxis Potential" is a Dark Ops challenge with a calling-card reward — there is no achievement attached — and the whole quest is soloable.

The full write-up

Firebase Z is the Dark Aether saga’s second chapter: Omega Group’s Outpost 25 in Vietnam’s A Shau Valley, built over the campaign’s Firebase Ripcord and hiding a dimensional gateway the Soviets are mining for Aetherium. Play starts in the Village and teleports out to the firebase proper, and the mission is personal — Samantha Maxis is somewhere on the other side of that gateway.

Power: the three Aether Reactors

The power switch is gone; in its place are three Aether Reactors — at Mission Control, the Data Center and Military Command, one through each gate off the Helipad. All three must be switched on, and doing so starts the map’s tower-defence wrinkle: periodic Assault Rounds where a Dark Aether surge opens at one of three fortified sites and the fire-control terminal there has to be defended. Holding it pays out power-ups; from the third assault on, an Orda may join the attackers.

Pack-a-Punch

The machine stands in the Village Atrium from the very first round — dark. There is no build step this time: light all three Aether Reactors, teleport back, and it works.

Wonder weapon: the RAI K-84

The RAI K-84 is Dr. Dimitri Kuhlklay’s automatic Aetherium rifle, with an underbarrel that fires slowing trap-orbs; Pack-a-Punched it becomes the Discordian Disruptor. It comes from the Box or Trials, or free through a build quest that starts with the blueprint in the Weapon Lab and runs through the grim retrieval of Kuhlklay’s own eye for a retina scanner, a Mimic-guarded barrel, a dartboard puzzle and a power cell torn from a charging Mangler.

Perks

Tombstone Soda makes its Cold War debut on the Helipad: go down and you rise as a Dark Aether shadow that can fight its way back to life. Jugger-Nog, Quick Revive, Speed Cola and Stamin-Up have machines across the outpost, with Der Wunderfizz in the Village covering the rest once power is on. Jump pads near each reactor launch players out to the defence sites.

Special enemies

Two enemies debut here: the Mimic, a shapeshifter that lies in wait disguised as loot and screams when the disguise drops, and the Orda, the skyscraper-scale horror that anchors both the assault waves and the quest finale. Manglers return to the series here — their first Dark Aether appearance, though they have menaced Zombies since Gorod Krovi — alongside Hellhounds and armored zombies.

The main quest: “Maxis Potential”

The quest — a Dark Ops challenge rather than an achievement — is a rescue: dose the treacherous Dr. Peck with truth serum, capture near-dead Mimics to replay stolen Omega memories, stabilise the gateway with excavated Aetherium crystals, and pull Samantha Maxis out of the Dark Aether before the outpost’s reactor overloads. It ends with an Orda boss fight in the Village and is fully soloable.

Story

Samantha infiltrated Outpost 25 to meet Requiem’s inside man, Captain Sergei Ravenov, and was caught by Omega’s lead scientist — the American defector William Peck — who threw her into the Dark Aether. The rescue succeeds, but Samantha comes back changed, her eyes glowing; Ravenov stays in the field, pointing the story at the Ural Mountains and Outbreak; and in the post-credits, Kravchenko takes one of Peck’s eyes as the price of failure.
