The Die Maschine main quest, "Seal the Deal," opens the Dark Aether storyline: Requiem re-enters the rift the Omega Group reopened at Projekt Endstation and shuts it for good. It needs the D.I.E. Shockwave plus all four of its elemental variants, and it ends on a protect-and-escape sequence rather than a boss fight. Cold War’s forgiving systems make it a strong first modern main quest.
Die Maschine opens the Dark Aether saga — a clean reboot of the Zombies story — on the ruins of Nacht der Untoten, now the heart of an abandoned Nazi particle-physics facility in Poland. Cold War’s modern systems (custom loadouts, weapon rarity, armour, salvage and crafting) sit on top of the classic round-based loop, and with self-revives and a short, forgiving main quest it is one of the most beginner-friendly maps in the series.
Work down through the facility to the Main Power room and press the red button there. Jugger-Nog, Stamin-Up and Quick Revive run on their own generators and can be bought before main power is even on. With power restored you reactivate the Particle Accelerator using its two terminals, which is what opens the way to Pack-a-Punch.
In the Particle Accelerator room, interact with the two terminals and a Dark Aether anomaly opens in the centre of the room. Step through the portal, follow the waypoint to grab a Machine Part, then return and place it to forge the Pack-a-Punch machine — after which you are pulled back out with it usable. It is a short detour into the Dark Aether rather than a long build, and it does not require the Aetherscope.
The D.I.E. Shockwave — the Decompressive Isotopic Estrangement Machine — is guaranteed, not luck of the Box. Kill a Megaton for a keycard, open the locked cabinet in the Weapons Lab for the D.I.E. Remote, then free the machine itself from behind a wall in the old Nacht bunker. Its base shot is a concussive blast with a vacuum alt-fire, and four elemental variants — Cryo-Emitter, Nova-5, Electrobolt and Thermophasic — each swap its effect once you complete their short unlock steps.
Cold War rebuilt the survival layer around a few systems worth knowing: an armour plate carrier repaired with salvage, a Crafting Table for equipment and support, Field Upgrades and Ammo Mods, and Aetherium Crystals that permanently upgrade your perks, field upgrade and ammo mods through skill tiers. The Aetherscope is a Requiem buildable — assembled from three parts and crafted behind Pack-a-Punch — that reveals ghostly "spectral reflections" in the Dark Aether and is a main-quest tool rather than a gate on anything.
Six perks are on the map at launch — Jugger-Nog, Quick Revive, Speed Cola, Stamin-Up, Deadshot Daiquiri and Elemental Pop, with Der Wunderfizz also present — and each can be pushed through several upgrade tiers with Aetherium Crystals. (Tombstone arrived later, in a seasonal update, rather than being on the map at release.)
The map’s stand-out enemy is the Megaton, an armoured hazmat heavy that splits into two smaller, radioactive copies when you break it — and whose death can drop the D.I.E. keycard. Plaguehounds burst into toxic gas on death (you need that gas for the Nova-5 variant), and Heavy Zombies round out the elite roster. Note that the Mangler and the Orda are not part of Die Maschine; the Orda is only ever glimpsed walking through the trees in the Dark Aether at high rounds.
The quest closes the rift the Omega Group reopened. In outline: reactivate the accelerator and forge Pack-a-Punch, then collect three Aetherscope parts and build it; use it to surface Dr. Vogel’s reflection and return his diary, unlocking the Der Wechsler terminal; charge that terminal with the D.I.E.’s four elements; and finally protect Dimitri Orlov at the accelerator through three shutdown steps before escaping to the surface within a tight timer. It ends on a protect-and-escape sequence — there is no Orda boss fight here.
Die Maschine is the first chapter of the Dark Aether continuity, wholly separate from the original Aether saga. A wartime particle-accelerator experiment at Projekt Endstation in Morasko, Poland tore a rift to the Dark Aether and raised the dead; decades on, the CIA-backed Requiem team under Grigori Weaver races the Soviet Omega Group — who are harvesting the unstable Aetherium as a weapon — to seal it. Samantha Maxis returns as a rogue agent whose smuggled tape sets Requiem in motion.
