Love and War runs seven phases and ends in a two-stage boss fight, first alongside the original Nikolai and then against him. There is a hard clock on the reward: you have 115 minutes from the start of the game to finish and receive all perks. The quest can still be completed afterwards, but the perk reward is gone.
Gorod Krovi drops Primis into an alternate Stalingrad where Group 935’s dragons and Soviet mech soldiers have already fought each other to a standstill. It is the third Descent map and the most mechanically front-loaded of the Black Ops III lineup: before you can Pack-a-Punch you have to get a dragon to carry you off the map entirely.
The trade-off is that its setup is linear rather than cryptic. There is one power switch in an obvious place, and the Pack-a-Punch chain is a sequence you can memorise in an evening. What makes the map hard is what happens while you do it — dragons that blanket whole streets in fire, and armoured Manglers that will not stop advancing.
One switch, just inside the entrance of the Dragon Command Center, near S.O.P.H.I.A.’s terminal. After the elaborate multi-stage power of Zetsubou No Shima this is a deliberate return to a single lever — flip it and the map is on.
The machine is not on the map. It sits in the Hatchery, and you get there by riding a dragon, which means unlocking the dragon network first.
The GKZ-45 Mk3 is the box weapon and the reason to spin. It is dual-wielded: the GKZ-45 in the left hand throws yellow clouds that slow anything caught in them, and the Ray Gun Mark III in the right fires a piercing beam with a heavy headshot multiplier — and, unlike every previous Ray Gun, does no damage to you. Shoot one of your own yellow clouds with the Mark III and it collapses into a black hole. Upgraded, it becomes the Maelstrom of Eris.
Two more are quest rewards rather than box pulls. The Gauntlet of Siegfried puts a dragon whelp on your arm — it breathes fire, bites harder than the Bowie Knife, and can be sent up as a sentry, which also powers up your punch while it is airborne. The Dragon Strike is an equipment-slot marker: throw it and zombies crowd it like a Monkey Bomb, then a dragon strafes the spot. Around forty kills with it, plus marking the red Iron Cross flags outside the map, upgrades it to the Draconite Controller.
The Guard of Fafnir is the map’s shield and it is not optional. It blocks the front as usual, but critically it also blocks dragon fire if you hold it out — which is the only way to cross a street a dragon has set alight. It carries three fireball charges that one-shot Manglers and Valkyrie Drones, refilling one per round.
| Part | Where it spawns |
|---|---|
| Dragon Visage | The Infirmary |
| Core | The Department Store, or the Operations Bunker |
| Maw | The Armory |
It upgrades to Tiamat’s Maw: survive dragon fire twice with the shield held out, get fifty kills with it, shoot the three purple inscriptions around the map, then dip the shield in the dead dragon’s remains in Belinski Square.
Six machines: Jugger-Nog (2500), Quick Revive (500 solo, 1500 co-op), Speed Cola (3000), Double Tap Root Beer (2000), Stamin-Up (2000) and Mule Kick (4000). Der Wunderfizz is present at 1500 and is the only way to get Deadshot Daiquiri, Electric Cherry or Widow’s Wine here.
Russian Mangler Soldiers are the map’s pressure: armoured, arm-cannon-equipped, and relentless, though less durable than a Panzersoldat. Valkyrie Drones replace the hellhound round and convert ordinary zombies into Electrified Zombies that stun you on contact. The dragons themselves are terrain rather than enemies — they set an area on fire, kill you slowly if you stand in it, and turn zombies into Napalm Zombies.
The main quest runs seven steps and is one of the longer ones in the game. In outline: power the Hatchery generator and shoot down the dragon egg; find the humming valve and recover the Master Code Cylinder against a five-minute timer; spell KRONOS on S.O.P.H.I.A.’s spin wheels; find six silver trophies; complete six tasks she sets, five in random order and the download always last; free the original Nikolai by delivering a power core to his mech; then fight a dragon alongside him before he turns on you and you fight the mech itself.
Finishing it grants every perk and, unusually, unlimited perk slots.
Belinski Square is the training floor: a wide, readable loop with sightlines down every feeder lane. The Gauntlet of Siegfried earns its quest twice over up here — the whelp deployed as a sentry thins the horde behind you, and the 115 Punch it grants while airborne one-shots ordinary zombies deep into the rounds.
The GKZ-45 Mk3 from the box is the collapse weapon, and the dragon overhead is a hazard worth scheduling around rather than fighting: its strafing fire owns whole lanes for seconds at a time. Keep a crawler for setup rounds, and expect Valkyrie drones and armoured Russian mangler units to force you off any loop you get too comfortable on.
