Main Quest

Main Quest

Trial by Ordeal

Rhodes Manor’s trial — the achievement asks the party to defeat the evil within — splits into three quest lines that can be run in any order: the Telescope’s silver-and-zodiac astronomy, the Knight’s blue-flame fireplaces and Werewolf sacrifice, and the Effigy’s graveside spirit walk. Each ends in a lockdown and a stone slab; all three open the Ruins beneath the Forest, where the Shadow Werewolf falls only under the statue light-traps, across three phases. Soloable, for anyone who can hold a manor alone.

The full write-up

Dead of the Night is the Chaos story’s true beginning and its best party: the night of March 20, 1912, at Rhodes Manor in Hampshire, where the Order gatecrashes Alistair Rhodes’s soirée, kidnaps the host, and turns the guest list. The survivors are the mode’s most preposterous ensemble — Kiefer Sutherland’s stage cowboy, Helena Bonham Carter’s phony psychic, Brian Blessed’s thunderous retired general, and Charles Dance as Godfrey the butler, alive only because he drew the ritual circle himself.

The manor

The house splits the party Verrückt-style at spawn, east wing from west, until the Sentinel Artifact on the Grand Staircase reunites them. Beyond the galleries, library and greenhouse lie the grounds: a cemetery with a hidden crypt, and the Forest — three dark paths with the Pack-a-Punch machine at their end and a Werewolf guaranteed on first entry.

Pack-a-Punch

Reaching the machine is a three-crystal séance: find the purple, green and blue crystals, charge each with kills, gaze into them, and pass each one’s randomized trial — a Nosferatu ambush, a sundial vigil, a ghost escort — for the three Tuning Forks that open the Forest gate.

Three wonder weapons

Alistair’s Folly, the host’s own explosive revolver, comes from the box or a Library safe, and climbs through Chaos Theory to Alistair’s Annihilator, whose charged shots shrink zombies and throw fireballs. The Savage Impaler, an automatic pneumatic crossbow, is won from the crypt at the price of a locked-in Nosferatu ambush. The Stake Knife one-shots any vampire on any round — and buildable silver bullets, melted in the wine cellar, are the answer to the Werewolves.

Special enemies

The manor fights with gothic horror: swarming Nosferatu whose bites slow your healing, the rarer red Crimson variant that latches on and feeds, hulking Werewolves weak to silver, and the elemental Catalysts carried over from the Titanic.

The main quest: “Trial by Ordeal”

Three parallel quest lines — the Telescope, the Knight and the Effigy — can be run in any order, each ending in a lockdown and a stone slab. All three slabs open the Ruins beneath the Forest for a three-phase fight with the Shadow Werewolf, vulnerable only under the statue light-traps. Soloable, and the achievement asks exactly what the night demands: defeat the evil within.

Story

The victory is a massacre deferred: Dark Godfrey murders all three guests and torches the manor, and it is Scarlett who arrives in the outro — too late for everyone but the audience — shooting Godfrey, chasing her father’s captors, and reading the letter that names Diego, Bruno and Shaw. Three weeks later she boards the Titanic, and the Chaos story is properly underway.
