Main Quest

Main Quest

Time Travel Will Tell

Shangri-La’s main quest frees — or tries to free — the explorers Brock and Gary from the temple’s time loop, and ends with the second artifact of Richtofen’s Grand Scheme: the Focusing Stone, shrunk down from a giant Element 115 meteor by wonder-weapon beams. It requires exactly four players, because the eclipse that powers every step takes four buttons pressed in the same instant, and one later step needs three players weighing a grate while a fourth rides the slide. The stone-bearer keeps all eight perks permanently.

Difficulty: Hard

The full write-up

Shangri-La is the myth made lethal: a jungle-shrouded temple hidden in the Himalayas, where Ultimis arrive by teleporter chasing the next piece of Richtofen’s plan. Released in Black Ops’ Annihilation pack, it is the mode’s densest trap gauntlet — mine carts, geysers, punji stakes, a shifting mud maze — and the site of a time-loop story it never fully explains until you play the quest.

Power

Not one switch but two: a pair of water levers side by side in the underground power room, driving the temple’s water-powered generators. Both opening paths — the waterfall side and the mine-cart tunnel — lead down to them.

Pack-a-Punch

Reaching Pack-a-Punch is a group ritual: every player in the game stands on a pressure plate at the same moment — the active plates scale from one solo to four — which stops the rotating statues and makes the temple stairs at spawn climbable. The window is timed; a skull rises beside the stairs, and when it tops out, rushing water sweeps everyone back down. Every upgrade trip re-runs the ceremony.

Wonder weapon: the 31-79 JGb215

The Box holds the 31-79 JGb215 — the shrink ray, the "Baby Gun". It deals no damage at all: it shrinks zombies for a few seconds, and shrunken zombies die to a single hit or a passing kick. Pack-a-Punched into The Fractalizer it shrinks longer and holds more, and its beams do double duty in the main quest’s finale.

Perks

All eight Black Ops perks are obtainable, Shi No Numa-style: the machines shuffle locations game to game, with only Quick Revive (spawn) and Mule Kick (waterfall base) fixed. The Black Ops III remaster swaps PhD Flopper for Widow’s Wine, dolphin dives having not survived the trip.

Special enemies

Two zombie variants debut: the Napalm Zombie, a slow burning hulk that detonates into a lingering fire pool, and the Shrieker, a sprinter whose scream whites out your vision. Around the temple top, monkeys shadow every power-up drop — grab it before they do, or kill the thief and take whatever the drop has randomised into on its back.

The main quest: “Time Travel Will Tell”

The quest needs exactly four players, because its heart — the eclipse — takes four buttons pressed at once, throwing the temple into an ancient past under a blacked-out sun. Across a dozen steps that alternate present and past, the crew works to free two trapped explorers, Brock and Gary, and ends by shrinking a giant Element 115 meteor into the Focusing Stone. Whoever lifts it holds all eight perks permanently; everyone gets the achievement; and the explorers, despite it all, stay looped.

Story

Brock and Gary came seeking proof of Agartha and found the temple instead — and the quest’s every "rescue" only resets them to the moment of discovery, an endless loop the crew exploits rather than breaks. The Focusing Stone is the second of the two artifacts Richtofen’s Grand Scheme requires; with the Golden Rod already in hand from the Siberian coast, the road now leads only one place: up.
